Agua Fresca Hibiscus Guava

Agua de Jamaica with guava and chia

3.4 from 45 ratings

From $24.99Price shown at our last check and set by the store, not by us.

Cold water turns the powder deep red. We blend dried hibiscus flower with pieces of dried guava and whole chia seeds. The seeds swell as the jug sits on the counter. The mix is sweetened, with a tart kick from the jamaica that balances the fruit. It matches the market stall drink people drink by the liter.

Stirred up in a sweaty glass pitcher when the afternoon heat settles on the porch.

A serving here is a weight, not a glass. We divide the pouch by the number of servings printed on it, so the grams add up whatever size cup you drink from.

What goes into it

Dried fruit and flower

We grind real hibiscus calyces and mix in bits of dried guava. The flower brings sharp tartness and red color, while the guava softens the punch. It smells like the fruit crates in a mercado.

Chia in the glass

Whole chia seeds go right into the blend. Give the jug five minutes and the seeds soften and swell, floating alongside the guava bits. Most people drink it as it pours, but a strainer works if you prefer clear juice.

Sweet and sharp balance

The powder is sweetened. If you use a heavy scoop, the drink turns rich and sweet. Stir in extra cold water to let the sour bite of the hibiscus lead. Plenty of ice keeps it crisp.

Small and big pouches

We pack this blend in a small pouch for a single pitcher and a big pouch for long afternoons in the yard. Both seal shut so the fruit pieces stay dry in the cupboard until you need another round.

How much powder goes in the jug

The pouch tells you how many servings are in it. It does not tell you how much goes in a two quart jug on a Tuesday, and that is the number everybody actually wants.

Hot pots

Ponche on the stove

Hibiscus shows up in both drinks, which is where the confusion starts. One is a cold red jug with a single flavor in it. The other is a December pot with half an orchard going.

Made the same way

Stirred into cold water and poured over ice.

Agua Fresca Hibiscus Guava

Hibiscus and guava agua fresca with whole chia seeds that swell in cold water to make a deep red drink.
