How far each pouch goes
Most brands sell a bag and leave you guessing what to buy for a crowded table. This table shows how many glasses or plates come out of each pouch.
Every blend, by the gram
| Blend | Made in | One serving | Enough for six | 500 g pouch | 1 kg pouch |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Agua Fresca Hibiscus Guava | Cold jug | 10 g | 60 g | 50 servings | 100 servings |
| Agua Fresca Horchata | Cold jug | 10 g | 60 g | — | 100 servings |
| Agua Fresca Lime and Chia | Cold jug | 10 g | 60 g | — | 100 servings |
| Agua Fresca Marzipan | Cold jug | 10 g | 60 g | 50 servings | 100 servings |
| Ponche Mexicano | Hot pot | 29 g | 174 g | 17 servings | 34 servings |
| Cafe de la Olla | Hot pot | 29 g | 174 g | 17 servings | — |
| Mexican Chocolate Chiapas | Hot pot | 29 g | 174 g | 17 servings | 34 servings |
| Mole Oaxaqueno | Sauce pan | 14 g | 84 g | 35 servings | — |
| Mole Poblano | Sauce pan | 14 g | 84 g | — | 71 servings |
A serving here is a weight, not a glass. We divide the pouch by the number of servings printed on it, so the grams add up whatever size cup you drink from.
A dash means we do not pack that blend in that size yet.
Reading the table
Why grams and not glasses
Nobody prints the size of the cup you are going to drink from, so a number of servings on its own tells you nothing you can plan a table around. What the pouch does print is how many servings it holds, and how much it weighs. Divide one by the other and you get a figure that adds up.
That is the whole of the arithmetic here. The middle column is one serving by weight, the next one is six of them, and the last two say how many servings each pouch size holds.
Cooking for a crowd
Read the column for six and multiply. Twelve people at a long table is that figure doubled, which for most of the cold blends is still well inside a single small pouch.
The moles work differently, because a plate of mole is not a glass of anything. One cup of finished paste covers four to six plates, and the guide on loosening it carries the rest of the arithmetic.
A dash means we do not pack that blend in that size yet.
Now pick one
Tell the picker what you are making and how many are sitting down, and it names a pouch and a size.
